System Integration

System Integration

What is Systems Integration?

The term "systems integration", with regards to solar powered systems, is used to describe how a photovoltaic or solar thermal module is connected and deployed to make the best use of the climatic conditions and local environment.

For example the application of a PV panel to the roof of a house includes a range of power electronics, including inverters, charge controllers, multiple power point tracking, and batteries( in the case of an off-grid system), which all influence the overall efficiency of the PV system.

In addition, a combination of photovoltaic and thermal technologies within the same device can be formed. These systems typically consist of PV panel with a thermal absorber plate attached at the rear. The purpose of the absorber is two fold: Firdtly to collect thermal energy that would otherwise be lost and secondly to cool the PV panel, therefore improving its electrical properties.

What are the challenges for Systems Integration?

Tracking the maximum power point of a PV array is essential to any PV system if high system efficiencies are to be achieved. Commercial power converters are not designed to deal with the resulting non-ideal system characteristics, and thus often deliver poor tracking performance. A key issue, therefore, is the development of new tracking algorithms that are able to track effectively under real operating conditions.

With high densities of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) arrays in the distribution grid, variable irradiance can lead to undesirable variations of power quality at the point of connection. The output from the power converters that interface PV arrays to the grid may also vary in quality. In addition, as the numbers of grid-connected PV sources increases, the demands on the electrical energy aggregation and control systems also increase.

How are these challenges being addressed by SISER researchers?

The reliability and robustness of PV systems over time is a research area at Heriot-Watt University. Their expertise include reliability engineering and ways to predict the electrical component/system reliability under harsh operating conditions.

Researchers at Strathclyde have been working on the development of maximum power point tracking algorithms for PV systems capable of delivering high power quality under non-ideal ‘real world’ operating conditions. They are also looking to address the issues associated with grid connection by considering the design of power electronic converters and their control algorithms that comprise the PV energy delivery system.

Power electronics based grid integration PV system research is being carried out at the University of Aberdeen.  Different power electronics converter topologies (current source or voltage source) are recommended for grid connection and isolated systems. To enhance the PV system efficiency and performance, different maximum power point tracking algorithms are being developed and designed especially for partial shading conditions. The parallel operation of different PV units is under investigating for megawatt power range to achieve more secure and reliable source.
